If you own a boat of any kind, whether it’s a canoe or a yacht, you should take steps to protect it from damage. In our experience at Renegar Construction, many people simply cover their boats in tarps when not in use, but this method offers limited protection. To keep your vessels truly safe from the elements, we recommend building a boat house.
In this article, we’ll go over how a few key reasons to store your watercraft in boat houses.
- Avoid Rain Damage – First of all, boat houses protect your vessels from the damaging effects of rain. Although boats are designed to sail in the water, they can easily become damaged if exposed to rainwater. Storing your craft in a boat house will protect it from this source of water damage.
- Limit Sun Exposure – Second, storing boats in boat houses protects them from UV radiation. The UV rays from the sun start a process of decay known as the photoelectric effect, in which photons (light particles) cause electrons to escape from the atoms of the material in question. This effect is what causes outdoor furniture and structures to become bleached and dry over time, and it will do the same to your boat. However, you can protect your craft from this process by storing it in the shade of a boat house.
- Prevent Theft – Lastly, storing your watercraft in boat houses will keep your vessels safe from trespassers, vandals, and thieves. If you want to make sure no one can access your boat but you, we recommend storing it in a boat house with a sturdy lock.
